The China-Hungary Belt and Road Joint LaboratoryonFood Science (Preparation) (hereinafter referred to as the“Joint Laboratory”) was approved for construction in October 2024 as one of the 4th batch of national Belt and Road Joint Laboratories. Hosted by Southwest University, the Joint Laboratory involves joint participation of the College of Food Science, College of Agronomy and Biotechnology, College of Economics and Management, College of Journalism and Communication, College of Plant Protection, etc. The foreign co-construction partner is Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences. China-Hungary cooperation can be traced back to 2003. The China-Hungary Cooperative Research CenterofFood Science was established in 2017, on the basis of which this national-level joint laboratory was developed.
Aligned with the Belt and Road Initiative, the Joint Laboratory addresses major scientific and technological challenges in the food industries of China and Hungary. It conducts joint research across five key areas: exploration and innovative application of food microbial resources, intensive development and utilization of edible agricultural products, digital and intelligent food processing, food nutrition, safety and quality assurance, as well as food industrial economics and exchange and mutual learning of dietary cultures. China and Hungary have achieved remarkable progress in intergovernmental scientific and technological cooperation, collaborative research, application of research outcomes, scholar exchanges and joint training of students.
The Joint Laboratory brings together superior resources from both China and Hungary, featuring high-caliber research teams and an open and collaborative operational mechanism. It has more than 120 permanent and visiting researchers, including over 10 national-level talents. The Hungarian Director of the Joint Laboratory is Friedrich László; the Chinese Director is Fan Daming; the Chinese Executive Director is Kan Jianquan. The Chair of the Academic Committee is Academician Chen Wei. The Academic Committee consists of 17 experts including Academician Zhu Beiwei, Academician Xie Mingyong and Friedrich László. Looking ahead, the Joint Laboratory takes building a“China-Hungary Hub for Collaborative Innovation in Food Science and Technology”as its strategic goal. Adhering to the development philosophy of“Science and technology as the foundation, industry as the cornerstone, culture as the bridge”, it follows the principles of joint construction and sharing, demand-driven innovation, collaborative research and demonstration application. It promotes integrated development of joint research and development, talent training, technology transfer, achievement commercialization and cultural exchange, facilitates the deep integration of innovation chains, industrial chains and cultural chains, and strives to become a window and platform serving the Belt and Road Initiative and supporting food science and technology innovation and civiliational exchange along the Belt and Road routes.
